CARE Awards are awarded to DC Metro Area-based companies with significant commitments to employee engagement—both at work and home—and community service.  This win is Highlight’s second consecutive win building on our win in 2019. Due to the pandemic, the 2020 CARE Awards were canceled.

Highlight is firmly committed to supporting its employees and the community. The Environmental Service competition resulted in over 100 hours of clean-up, wildlife and nature tending, and implementation of more sustainable practices, and 1000 tree donations to One Tree Planted. In our third initiative, Sweat for the Vets, our team competed in mileage and 5k competition and ran a t-shirt campaign, resulting in $6787 donated to benefit The Mission Continues. The Highlight Cares Back-To-School-Drive helping Women Giving Back resulted in $835 employee donations, countless school supplies, and a corporate donation of $2000. Highlight will conduct our fifth initiative at the end of the year.

“It’s an honor to be recognized with a CARE Award for the second year in a row. More about Inc. and the Inc. 5000

Methodology

Companies on the 2021 Inc. 5000 are ranked according to percentage revenue growth from 2017 to 2020. To qualify, companies must have been founded and generating revenue by March 31, 2017. They must be U.S.-based, privately held, for-profit, and independent—not subsidiaries or divisions of other companies—as of December 31, 2020. (Since then, some on the list may have gone public or been acquired.) The minimum revenue required for 2017 is $100,000; the minimum for 2020 is $2 million. As always, Inc. reserves the right to decline applicants for subjective reasons. Growth rates used to determine company rankings were calculated to three decimal places. There was one tie on this year’s Inc. 5000.  Companies on the Inc. 500 are featured in Inc.’s September issue. They represent the top tier of the Inc. 5000, which can be found at http://www.inc.com/inc5000.

Highlight Converts To An Employee Owned Company

Fairfax, VA – On April 16, 2021, Highlight Technologies Inc. announced they have completed the sale of its stock to a newly-formed Employee-Owned Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP), continuing the vision of its founder and CEO, Rebecca Andino, in supporting an entrepreneurial workplace culture for talented and hard-working individuals. Ms. Andino, who remains the CEO, made the announcement during a recent company town hall meeting.

Highlight’s ESOP will benefit not only managers and executives; but will also provide significant long-term benefits to its nearly 1,000 employees through employer-only contributions.

The profits attributable to the ESOP are not taxable, allowing earnings to be used for strategic investments and contributions to the employee trust.

“I am excited that each of the employees of Highlight is now an employee-owner. We have a dedicated team that has worked hard to build a well-managed, high-performing business that delivers innovative solutions and services to our government customers. I’m thrilled that our team members will directly share in the value they are creating in the business,” said Highlight CEO Rebecca Andino.

“Being an employee-owned company helps us differentiate as an employer of choice for top talent. There aren’t many other government contracting firms that automatically give employees ownership in the company, and fewer of them are on rapid growth trajectories like Highlight,” said Highlight COO Adam McNair. “Our customers will receive the support of a team of employee-owners who each have a personal stake in customer satisfaction, innovation, and long term mission success,” he added.

The company was advised by FON Advisors (www.fonadvisors.com) and Bean Kinney & Korman, PC (www.beankinney.com), and financed by JPMorgan Chase (www.jpmorganchase.com). Terms of the transaction were not disclosed.

Seven out of the largest 100 government contractors (as ranked by Washington Technology) are ESOP-owned, and Highlight is one of only two ESOP-owned firms in Washington Technology’s 2020 Fast 50 list.

According to the National Center for Employee Ownership (NCEO), in 2021 there are roughly 6,600 ESOPs covering more than 14 million participants. Of the 100 largest U.S. employee-owned companies listed by NCEO in 2020, 12 are government contractors.

Highlight Graduates its Second Leadership Development Cohort

In February 2021, Highlight graduated its 2021 class of its Leadership Development program. This 2021 cohort consisted of 11 employees who support customers across the federal government, including the Small Business Administration (SBA), National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency (NGA), Department of Homeland Security (DHS), U.S. Army, Federal Communications Commission (FCC), Department of State, and Highlight’s corporate office.

The Leadership Development Program is a competitive and rigorous internal program designed for emerging leaders within the company to develop the skills required to advance as a leader. The six-month program provides employees the opportunity to develop their leadership style and skills, learn more about Highlight and the government contracting industry at large, and conduct a case study as a team.

The Leadership Development Program teaches participants how to be effective leaders, ways they can advance their careers, and how Highlight programs are led and managed. Previous program graduates have been promoted to Highlight management roles within the SBA and Department of Defense.

“Highlight is fortunate to have these talented and hard-working employees on our team. I commend each of them for doing the work to build their leadership abilities, develop relationships across the company, and learn about our company and industry. I am excited to see what’s next for them in their careers,” said Rebecca Andino, Highlight CEO.

Some of the graduates said the following about the program:

“I never thought that parts of my personality could make me a great leader. I have a love for people and have always led with more of a commitment to teamwork and empathy. For most of my career, my need to take care of others was deemed a weakness for leadership. I learned during the Leadership Development Program that, while I am an affirming leader, that I have the capability to stretch myself beyond my leadership dimension without losing who I am at the core.

Being a part of this program has also taught me how to effectively work with other leadership types and how we can get the best out of each other. I am extremely grateful for the opportunity Highlight has extended to me and I am excited to use all the tools discovered in the Leadership Development Program,” said Tammy P., Leadership Development Program Graduate.

“The Leadership Development Program was a refreshing experience in a world of uncertainties when dealing with different personalities in a daily work environment. I am now equipped with the tools to adapt and lead in whatever circumstance that may come to the surface in the workplace. The case study was very relatable to the new modern work environment that we now live in. I believe working through the case study materials and white paper with my group/partner gave a sense of accomplishment and put an exclamation mark on the completion of the course,” said Zayd A., Leadership Development Program Graduate.

Highlight Donates $10,000 Dollars To Feeding America And Donates 1,500 Items In Virtual Food Drive Event

According to Feeding America, an estimated 35 million Americans were living in food-insecure households before the COVID-19 pandemic. This number was expected to exceed 50 million by the end of 2020.

One of Highlight’s core values is to make a difference through community service. As a part of our Highlight Cares Initiative, Highlight held our first virtual food drive to encourage food donations across the country. In the month-long food drive, the team contributed a combination of physical canned foods and monetary donations to a total of 1,526 items across 15 states.

To further our positive impact, Highlight has donated $10,000 dollars to Feeding America. For each dollar donated, 10 meals are provided to those in need. In a combined effort of the corporate donation and team’s food drive, we have donated 115,000 meals across America!

Highlight thanks to all the employees who contributed to the food drive. Highlight understands community members have been affected differently by the Covid-19 pandemic and hopes that these donations will help those affected during these challenging times.

“This is a difficult time for so many people, and I’m pleased and grateful that so many Highlight team members were willing to contribute to food banks in their respective communities. I’m also grateful that Highlight was able to provide a financial contribution to Feeding America, to help families have the food they need” said Highlight CEO, Rebecca Andino.
